DAYLILY INFO AND PLANTING GUIDE
The DAYLILY or (HEMEROCALLIS) is actually an herbaceous perennial found naturally in China, Korea and Japan. Hybridizers have registered over 50,000 varieties and the number keeps rising. Not surprising then, daylilies come in many sizes, flower forms, colors and flowering times.
Many daylilies are very hardy making them a great choice for Canadian gardeners. They can be used in borders, drifts or even in containers.
Daylilies prefer an average to fertile soil with good drainage and adequate water. Most enjoy full sun (at least 4 hours a day), but will also do well in part shade. A mulch of organic material in late autumn or spring is always welcomed. Although quite drought tolerant once established, very dry conditions or excessive shade will likely reduce flowering. Some of the darker colors remain richer if given dappled shade. Daylilies for the most part are very trouble free from pests and disease, which is why they are so much fun to grow. We have never had cause to use chemicals. Your plants will improve with age sending up larger blooms and truer colors so try to be a bit patient. To maintain the plants vigor divide every 3 to 5 years depending on your growing conditions.
PLANTINGDaylilies can be planted from May through September spaced 1 to 3 feet apart depending on cultivar’s size. Loosen the soil to a depth of 12in. and add compost, well-rotted manure, blood meal or bone meal. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the roots when spread out. Form a cone at the bottom of the hole, place the daylily in the hole and spread the roots out evenly over the cone, water and cover the roots with soil no higher than 1 to 2 inches above the crown, (where the roots and foliage meet-often shows as a white mark) Gently firm the soil around the plant, mulch lightly and keep well watered until established and new growth emerges.
RECEIVING YOUR BARE ROOT DAYLILIESYour daylilies should be planted right away. Soak roots in water for a few hours or over night before planting. If you cannot plant them right away place them in a little water in a cool shady place. Do not let them freeze or dry out.
